Put a small feather from a bird within an earthen bowl, then add one tuft of fur from any animal, shortly followed by the dried and crushed reptile skin. Pour out and add one tablespoonful of powdered bone from a fish, together with a thimbleful of dew. Mix the contents with bare hands until it is doughy. Separate the mixture into two pieces and insert them in your ears. Using and amethyst-topped wand of hawthorn you recite the incantation while performing the movement of the third house of Mercury with the wand.

You will now be able to understand the speech of all earthbound mammals, avian birds and fish, yet it will not impart the capacity to speak or be understood by them in return. The spell itself will only last as long as the dough remains in your ears. Many have used this remedy to find lost treasures, to spy on their enemies by overhearing the private gossiping of the local fauna. There are, however, certain risks involved in this enterprise.
